THE SMA LECTURE 2004 : PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The rapid advances in medical science and technology, major changes in health care delivery, easy availability of abundant medical information to patients and increasing demand for quality care and accountability have radically changed the environment of medical practice. Professional practice has become much more complicated and complex as doctors are required to perform many different tasks sometimes with opposing interests. More importantly, medical professionalism which is based on the special relationship and trust between patient and doctor has been gradually eroded. In spite of overall improvement in quality of care, more patients are dissatisfied and more doctors are complained against for negligence. Medical professionalism has not kept pace with the changing world.
Continuing professional development is the process of formal and informal learning to meet the needs of patients, the health service and the community and includes an element of personal development. Besides keeping updated in clinical knowledge and skills for good clinical practice, developing attitudes and behaviour such as relationship with patients, ethical practice, working with colleagues, patient advocacy, accountability and quality care are also important.
The lecture will deal with the importance of professionalism, professional development as a life long approach to learning and the roles of the individual doctor, the professional bodies and institutions in enhancing professionalism
