SMA SEMINARS IN BIOETHICS
AND HEALTH LAW 2001-2

a joint project with Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the Law Society of Singapore

The practice of medicine is a much more complex endeavour today compared to even just ten years ago. Public expectations and scrutiny are even more rigorous and financial perspectives even more lecturesing than before. These lecturesures are being faced by doctors at all levels of practice – primary and specialists, public and private medicine. Moreover the rapidly developing medical technologies create new moral problems just as easily as they ease old technical difficulties. Decisions undoubtedly are still being made daily by doctors, as they must … but are those decisions right decisions, defensible ethically and legally?

Medicine is forced to seek answers to its ethical professional and practice dilemmas in Law and Philosophy. Law and Philosophy use different methods and speak different languages from medicine. Doctors are required to learn this new vocabulary in advancing the science, practice and art of medicine.

These seminars are organized by the Singapore Medical Association, SMA Centre for Medical Ethics & Professionalism (CMEP), in collaboration with the Law Society of Singapore and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The talks cover the essential theoretical background and address issues faced by clinicians of all specialities. The talks uniquely couple the ethical with the local legal provisions for each topic. The series will certainly enhance our awareness of the expectations that both the public and the courts are having of medical practice in today’s Singapore. This awareness can only improve the quality of our work even further.

For the topics in Year 2002, we will be focusing on Bioethics and Health Law of selected specialties, such as geriatrics, pediatrics, O&G, infectious diseases, psychiatry and organ transplantation. There are also sessions on legal interpretation of the MR Act and PHMC Act that all practitioners ought to be familiar with. These sessions are held on every second Thursday of the month (except June, Nov and Dec), from 5.30pm to 7.00pm, at the TTSH Theatrette (Level 1). Admission is Free. Pre-registration is not required, on first come first served basis.
