SMA MEDICAL ETHICS CONVENTION 2000

2 - 5 NOVEMBER 2000

COURSE IN HEALTH LAW & ETHICS

MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE : An Intensive Course On How To Reduce Your Chances Of Being Sued

Medical negligence ligitation is costly, complex, emotionally charged, publicised, socially-divisive; it is lengthy, distressing, traumatizing and cripplingly so. Often, even when the doctor wins, he has already lost in other ways.

This 2½ day intensive course will cover the law governing malpractice and informed consent, and review the importance of documentation and confidentiality of medical records. There will be heavy emphasis throughout on reducing the risk of, and successfully defending against, malpractice suit. At the end of the course, participants will gain a good understanding of the important issues at the interface of medicine and law, and will learn practical methods to reduce the risk of being sued for malpractice.

The curriculum will feature lectures, cased-based discussions, panel discussion, videotape, and pre- and post-tests. Ample opportunities will be provided for questions, feedback, and debates. Participants will receive a rich supplement of handouts and lecture notes.
