Fraternity on the Fairways

Amid the roar of planes from the neighbouring Changi Airport, 137 golfers gathered on 23 July 2026 at Tanah Merah Country Club's (TMCC) Garden Course for a fun day of golfing and reaffirming friendship across medical fields and specialties. Participants were welcomed at the venue with goodie bags packed to the brim, as well as a customised polo shirt. This year's SMA Annual Golf Tournament also marked the first time the event was extended to members of the Singapore Dental Association – three dentists managed to secure slots to this highly anticipated event.

After a delectable buffet lunch and a slight delay due to a lightning alert, the tournament successfully began with the shotgun tee-off at 1.45 pm. The overcast sky and intermittent rain did not deter participants from flocking to the greens, eager for a shot at the exciting array of awards and prizes up for grabs.

As the afternoon passed and the Tournament wound down, the golfers reconvened at the Garden Clubhouse for dinner. The atmosphere was convivial, with participants animatedly exchanging their personal highlights of the afternoon. Convenor Dr Charles Tan welcomed everyone with a speech, in which he briefly shared about the Tournament's history dating back to 1967. He also highlighted this year's collaboration with Singapore Dental Association and expressed his hope for more interprofessional games in the future, emphasising that "Trophies are secondary; camaraderie and friendship are more important." He then thanked sponsors, SMA staff and fellow golfers for their support, and with that, dinner began!

Amid a procession of mouthwatering Chinese-style dishes, golfers were thoroughly amused by emcee-entertainer Happy Fei Fei, who kept spirits high with a variety of exciting games. Midway through the evening, Dr Tay Jam Chin, SMA Golf Captain of the Inter-Professional Games, was invited onstage to present the first half of the 30 lucky draw prizes. Among the prizes to be won were dining vouchers, TaylorMade golf balls and Mitsubishi standing fans, with the compliments of our generous sponsors.

At long last, it came time to announce the eagerly anticipated results of the day. Dr Charles Tan returned onstage alongside Tournament Director Dr Gary Chee to distribute the awards. Cheers and applause resounded through the room as the winners were revealed. Dr Goh Swee Heng retained her crown as the Best Senior Lady Golfer for the second year running and Dr Adrian Tan Yong Kuan took home the Best Stableford (Overall) award with a total score of 39 points, once again securing his place as the convenor for the SMA Annual Golf Tournament 2027. It was a particularly fortuitous night for first-time participant Dr Ong Sea Hing, who won Nearest the Line (Hole #16) at 0.8 m as well as a lucky draw prize. Dr Ong also shared with us that his colleagues had invited him to this year's Tournament for a day of bonding between specialties, and that he had also scored a birdie on the first hole!

Once the results were announced, SMA Sports and Games Committee Chairperson Dr Chia Yih Woei took to the stage to give out the rest of the lucky draw prizes. Winning the first and second lucky draw prize, Dr Sen Jitendra Kumar and Dr Dennis Lim Teck Hock each walked away with a complimentary four-ball flight courtesy of TMCC. The evening then drew to a close as golfers took their leave, hands and hearts laden with mementos and memories of the day.

SMA would like to express our appreciation to Dr Charles Tan as well as all Members, guests and sponsors for making the SMA Annual Golf Tournament 2026 a success, and we hope to see more of you at the next event!
